Local runners hold the KwaThema flag high

The team is currently preparing for the track athletics event which will be held in Ruimsig on September 21.

KwaThema – Athletes from Ulinda Athletics Clubs held the local flag high when they competed in the Cross-Country SA Championships selections in Centurion over the weekend.

Ten of the athletes qualified to run at the championships.

Team coach Sparks Mawela Moagi says the group started with participating in four cross-country leagues which began in April at Dorothy Nyembe Park in Soweto.

“We progressed to Buhle Park in Vosloorus, KwaThema Cross-Country and Kagiso league, which allowed us to qualify to compete in the selection for the SA Championships in August.

“Ten of our runners who competed with runners from nine provinces made the cut and made it to the SA Championships, which will be held on a date that will be communicated soon.

In the 50 plus category, Moagi received a gold medal and the overall fourth position.

“Lesia Siyabi obtained position one and a gold medal in the 70 plus group.

“Lee Nyathi received a silver team prize, while Lenah Nyathi finished fifth.

“Lebogang Sibanda obtained fifth position, Lefa Kwanele finished fifth in the u-15 group and twins Paballo and Palesa Ramatladi finished fifth and sixth.

“Phindile Dludlu was in the fourth position in the 2km run, while Ntokozo Msimango completed the run in the sixth position,” he says.

The team is currently preparing for the track athletics event which will be held in Ruimsig on September 21.

“We are hoping the team will continue making us proud and bring more gold medals home,” he adds.
