Powerlifting gains popularity in the hood

Bafana Manake wants to give power lifting a platform in the community

On Saturday, Bafanation hosted the final segment of their powerlifting road show at KwaThema Hall.

“Power lifting is made up of different activities to showcase the human strength.

“This includes pushing and pulling, dead lifting, bench pressing and lunges,” explains Bafana Manake, the event organiser.

The sport involves the athlete attempting a maximal weight single lift of an object.

He says most people do not realise how strong they are until they try the sport.

“The purpose of the road show is to expose the community to a different sporting code.

“And the career opportunities that may come with it.

“We want to get as many people as possible to join and understand it,” he adds.

The 35 participants were of different ages and fitness.

“Basically, anyone can powerlift.

“The sport is not just for your typical ‘tough guys’.

“It is all about pushing yourself and establishing your own body’s limits.”

The day’s events also included aerobics which is meant to build endurance in the athletes.

The road show started in March at Green Apple Gym.

“The top 15 participants received certificates and medals for their efforts because this is the final.”

Bafana’s ultimate goal is to have a consistent club for the sport in KwaThema.
