Local butcher brightens the day of local runners with running gear donation

“I have visited the team a few times when they were practising and I am impressed by their hard work."

KwaThema – Langaville Athletics Health and Fitness Academy received a donation of running gear from a local butchery on Monday.

A team of young people who are trained in athletics now have more than one gear to use while competing.

Team coach and Ward 79 sports coordinator Sakkie Kgapholaays says as a team they appreciate every help and support they receive from the community.

“We are trying to remove children from the streets, committing crimes, drugs, teenage pregnancies, and other activities that would steal their innocence.

“We appreciate all the help that we receive from the local business people. If it wasn’t for them the team might have long stopped existing.

“We have sponsors that are dedicated to catering for the runners while at competitions and providing travelling costs.

“We are now in need of tracksuits and gazebos, which the children will use while competing away from home,” he says.

Sakkie is calling on parents to also come to the fore and support their children in sports.

“This helps to build their self-esteem and morale on the ground to excel.

“We also need the help of the metro to come to help train young upcoming coaches who will in future train the local runners,” he says.

The butchery manager, Ezequiel Pereira, says he decided to sponsor the team with running gear because he identified their dedication in the sport.

“I have visited the team a few times when they were practising and I am impressed by their hard work.

“I also feel these are young people whose talent has to be nurtured for them to reach their full potential.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to play a role in paving a brighter tomorrow for the children. One day one of the runners will get an opportunity to compete internationally because of the support from all of us who identified their talent and the need for it to be nurtured,” he says.
