KwaThema students march against gender violence

“We are also concerned about the gender-based violence in our communities and we are trying to find ways to remedy the situation.”

KwaThema – Students at Ekurhuleni East TVET College delivered their memorandum of grievances to the police at KwaThema Police Station on Tuesday.

The march was held in response to the rising number of domestic violence cases in their homes and community, and the abuse of female learners and LGBTQ people within the learning environment.

KwaThema police spokesperson Const Media Khoza says the students also requested a partnership with the police to help fight gender-based violence and other crimes that are affecting them.

Lt Col Tebogo Mokoena received the memorandum on behalf of KwaThema SAPS management.

“We appreciate the stand by the students to fight against violence in their space.

“This shows that the future leaders of this country are ready to be the change they want to see in their communities.

“We are also concerned about the gender-based violence in our communities and we are trying to find ways to remedy the situation.

“Unfortunately, we will not be able to achieve this goal without the help of the community and other organisational bodies,” he says.

He promised they will work together to reduce crime, especially domestic violence and related crimes.
