New park for Ward 80 residents

“When completed, the park will be fitted with an eco-gym, amphitheater and a braai area where families can come and a picnic.”

KwaThema – The R8.6-million first-phase construction of Matlala Park in Ext 6 at the Barcelona open space along Vlakfontein Road is underway.

The construction started on June 3 and is expected to be completed in three months.

Ward 80 Clr Wilson Busakwe says the project was approved in last year’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) after public participation in the area in 2017.

“It was approved and now the metro is delivering what the community identified to be in need of.

“Initially the project was approved for Ward 77, but because of the recent demarcation changes it now falls into Ward 80.

“The first phase includes cleaning the ground and preparing it for paving and grass-planting.

“We have absorbed 10 local people and as soon as they finish cleaning, we will appoint local subcontractors who will pave and plant trees.

“When completed, the park will be fitted with an eco-gym, amphitheater and a braai area where families can come and a picnic,” he explains.

The councillor is urging residents not to disturb the project, as it is for their own personal gain.

“This project is meant to benefit the community and if we all allow the contractors to do their job, we will be able to hand it over in the estimated period of a year.
