Clothes and a warm meal for Marikana residents

Mnyakeni also says the group is always looking for donations in the form of clothes and food that will help them do more for the people of Marikana.

KwaThema – The Dorcas Women’s Group of the KwaThema Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church has their weekly soup kitchen in Marikana this Wednesday.
The project, which was started last year by the group, hands out clothing and a warm meal to the residents of the informal settlement.
“We thought to stand up and make a change in our small way after seeing the situation in which the people of Marikana live,” says chairperson of the group Dudu Mnyakeni.

“We asked for help from the church, who assist us with food that is bought from the money they collect.
“They also help us by donating the clothes we give to the children and their parents who come for a meal every week,” she adds.
Mnyakeni says it was important for them to go to the people of Marikana and not have them come to the church because their faith encourages them to.
“In Matthew, the Bible says ‘go ye therefore’, which we took to mean that we must go and be among God’s people to help and minister to them instead of expecting them to come to us,” she explains.
Zanele Hadebe, one of the parents who come to the soup kitchen with her son, Bandile, says she is grateful for the help brought by the women of the SDA Church.
“We are so grateful for all they do for us because we do not always have money for food and clothes, especially if you are like me and have many children,” she says.

According to Mnyakeni, the group will start teaching the people of Marikana beadwork from July 2.
“We want to teach them a skill so they can be able to make their own money and not always rely on donations and aid from others,” she concludes.
Mnyakeni also says the group is always looking for donations in the form of clothes and food that will help them do more for the people of Marikana.
To donate to the group contact Mnyakeni on 082 535 0224 or Dorcas Women’s Group secretary Nombuyiselo Nkambule on 073 246 1103.
