Construction at Nkumbulo Secondary School resumed

Certain buildings at the school are being reconstructed due to bad cracks, that started appearing in the walls.

KwaThema – Construction at Nkumbulo Secondary School resumed on May 13. The project was placed on hold because there was no site manager.

Certain buildings at the school are being reconstructed due to bad cracks, that started appearing in the walls.

The reconstruction will include underpinning.

Allen Mabena, community liaison officer of the project, explains that they had to start with demolishing the building blocks with cracks so they could do underpinning.

“Underpinning is the process whereby the depth of the foundation is strengthened or the repairing of faulty foundations,” says Allen.

Damaged structure and cracks usually indicate that underpinning is required, she says.

“A building needs underpinning when the cracks in the foundation are wider than 3.56cm, especially diagonal cracks,” says Mabena.

The initial project was implemented on January 21.

The project is estimated to last for nine months.

Clr Johannes Sibeko says the project is to ensure that learners are safe and secure.

“We want to ensure that our learners receive the best quality education by making sure that they are safe and their classrooms are constructed properly,” says Sibeko.

Sibeko also explains that four months have been lost due to the lack of a site manager.
