Families left shattered by frequent accidents on Tornado Road

The community says they now think of taking the law into their own hands because they have been raising the issue with the relevant people with no success.

KwaThema – The community of KwaThema in Tornado Road say they are fed up with the municipality not doing much about the frequent car crashes on this road.

On the evening of May 10 around 11.30pm a car crashed into Veli Zwane’s house on Tornado Road.

The driver is alleged to have been drunk and there were a total of five passengers in the car, including the driver.

No injuries were reported, but the wall of the backroom where a tenant was sleeping collapsed, fortunately the tenant escaped with no injuries.

Zwane says the road is notoriously known for car accidents as this kind of accidents happen frequently in their area.

“We have been pleading with the authorities and municipality to assist us by implementing road bumps because since 2006 houses along Tornado Road have been getting hit by cars,” says Zwane.

African Reporter spoke to various community members about this matter and they all agreed with what Zwane said. Joseph Phokwe (75) says: “Last year a car hit a pedestrian, who then fell into my yard after the car hit my wall.

“The pedestrian died there and the EMPD never did anything.

“My neighbour’s house was crashed into twice last year, mine was crashed into three times already.”

The community says they now think of taking the law into their own hands because they have been raising the issue with the relevant people with no success.

They say they are tired of living in fear and of innocent people being killed for no reason.

Lucky Mokoene says: “After our home was crashed into, the driver paid for the damages but thereafter nothing was done.

“Only one person died, but we are tired of living in constant fear because of this road.”

The car remains at the scene because the perpetrator cannot afford to tow it.

“Not only is my home destroyed, but our safety has been compromised. I don’t sleep well at night becuase of this,” says Zwane.
