Tsakane sports grounds need maintenance

“I am very frustrated because I am trying to help keep our children off the streets and away from substance abuse, but my junior boys' soccer team cannot even participate in their league because their home ground is not fit for use,” says Silinda.

Tsakane – The sports field on Vukuzenzele Street in Extension 12 has not been graded since 2017.

This is according to Matshidiso Silinda who runs an after-care organisation called Prosper Stars and coaches the youth in soccer and netball.

“I have been calling the municipality since early February and finally went to lay an official complaint at the Tsakane Customer Care Centre, where I was given a reference number and advised to call a lady named Faith who works at the Springs municipal offices,” she says.

Silinda says she has been in communication with the municipal offices in Springs that have been making empty promises.

“When I call them they keep promising they will grade the grounds, but they never do, nor do they make contact with me with updates unless I call first,” she adds.

Silinda says in March the metro came to grade the grounds, but only graded a field in Ext Five instead of the one in Ext 12, and when she raised the issue she was told the grounds would be levelled after the grader returned from Tembisa.

“I saw them grading in Ext Five and hoped we were next, but that was not the case as I was told in early March they would come after they came back from Tembisa, but they have yet to come,” she continues.

“The last time I spoke to Faith was on Tuesday when she told me the grader is broken and they will not be able to come and level the ground until it is fixed,” she says.

“I am very frustrated because I am trying to help keep our children off the streets and away from substance abuse, but my junior boys’ soccer team cannot even participate in their league because their home ground is not fit for use,” she concludes.

The metro failed to respond in time for publication.
