More local runners qualify for Comrades 2019

KwaThema – KwaThema Striders Athletics Club (KTSAC) braved the hot weather along with thousands of other runners who participated in the annual Soweto Marathon over the weekend.

This was part of their preparations for the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons in 2019.

Team spokesperson Sibongiseni Skhosana says 25 team members participated in the Soweto Marathon.

“We were registered in the 10km, 21km and 42km races.

“We are happy that out of that number, 15 people were able to finish their run on time, enabling them to qualify for the Comrades Marathon.

“The weather was not as favourable as always, but we are proud of them for pushing harder.

“All in all, 52 runners who began preparing in September will be participating in the annual run,” he says.

Sibongiseni says they are seeing more female runners joining their team and participating in the run.

“This shows they are dedicated to maintaining their fitness levels and living healthy lifestyles.

“We are encouraging others to come forward and join the team because it is never too late to start taking charge of your health.

“We have a group that runs on weekdays and on weekends during the 5km parkrun at Buluthando on Saturdays from 7.30am.

“We will also be launching an aerobics class as part of the training activities on Saturdays,” he says.
