Eudy Simelane’s life celebrated at the 10th Ekurhuleni Pride on Saturday
“Violence cannot continue to be a common language in the community.”
KwaThema – To celebrate the 10th anniversary of LBGTI Pride and to commemorate Eudy Simelane, former Banyana Banyana player who was raped and murdered in 2008.
The LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex) gathered at Eudy Park not only to celebrate but also to educate each other about intimate violence and how it affects same-sex relationships. The park is named in honour of Eudy who was killed 10 years ago.
Nokuthula Dladla, one of the guest speakers, emphasised that the community must stop normalising violence.

“What’s wrong is wrong, no matter who does it,” said Simelane.
One of the organisers, Reverend Doctor Muyema said the topic reminded people that it is important to show “kindness, compassion, gratitude and trust in a relationship”.
He added that peace, and not harming each other regardless of same-sex relationship or not, should always be the ultimate goal in every relationship.

Intimate partner violence is a sensitive issue which the community as a whole must strive to confront.
“Violence cannot continue to be a common language in the community,” says Muyema.
Miss EPOC Lesbian 2018 and Miss LBGTI Femme 2018 Daveyton Tokelo Letshedi said it was important that the topic is discussed because people are experiencing violence daily in the society.
