Ward 72 members touch lives of the needy

“We cannot continue expecting the government to help those in need. It is also our responsibility."

KwaThema – Members of Ward 72 took time out of their busy schedules to lend a helping hand to needy families over the weekend.

This was part of their contribution towards celebrating the centenary of the former first democratic president Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.

Organiser Bongani Mfombele says they felt the need to celebrate the struggle stalwart’s 100th year by improving the lives of others.

“The initiative is part of our annual donations we make.

“We started the initiative by renovating three shacks at Skoonplaas and painted another house in the area.

“We liaised with the leaders in the area to help us identify some of the residents who are in need.

“We donated food parcels and blankets to other households, and also donated a crutch to an elderly woman whose leg was amputated recently,” he adds.

Bongani further urges business people and the residents to extend a helping hand to those who are in need.

“We cannot continue expecting the government to help those in need. It is also our responsibility.

“There are a lot of people in the community who need help, even if that means helping just one family it still counts.

“We would make a greater difference if we all helped,” he says.
