Duduza police motivate learners to stay in school

“We know drug lords use school learners to peddle drugs on the school premises.”

Duduza – Members of the Duduza Police went beyond the call of duty by donating dignity pads to the learners from Iphahamiseng Primary School on Wednesday.

The initiative was aimed at empowering and motivating young women to focus on their studies.

Duduza Police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka says the campaign was initiated by the female police officers.

“They were concerned about the rising incidents of violence towards young women in the area.

“As the station we decided to support the initiative and identified some of the schools that could benefit from the initiative.

“We also wanted to curb the scourge of young women not attending classes during their monthly cycle.

“We want them to focus on their studies and not worry about not having sanitary towels,” he says.

Manaka adds through the initiative they are also building a relationship with the school and the learners.

“We want the learners to feel safe to come to us to report crime or any illegal activities they might suspect in their areas.

“We know drug lords use school learners to peddle drugs on the school premises.

“We will be able to keep drugs out of the schools with the help of the learners,” he says.

Manaka says stakeholders from the Department of Community Safety and Women as Safety Promoters (WASP) spoke to the learners about the dangers of teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.

“They also addressed the importance of personal hygiene,” he says.
