Chief whip promises to deliver a house to Gogo Evelinah of Tsakane soon

“My shack floods on rainy days and as a result it has ruined most of my valuables."

Tsakane – Gogo Evelinah Mahamba (80) could not contain her joy when she received a visit from the ANC chief whip Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi and other members of the Ekurhuleni mayoral council last Thursday.

Mahamba has been waiting for a house which she was promised by the government 21 years ago.

Dlabathi and the MMC for human settlement Clr Lesiba Mpya assured her she will be in her brand-new house by October this year.

Gogo’s plea was heard during the exco’s door-to-door visit in the area.

She explained she has been staying in a shack for years and cannot afford to build her own house.

“I have been fed promises through the years, but now that the MMC for housing has made the promise, I believe my prayers will be answered.

“My shack floods on rainy days and as a result, it has ruined most of my valuables.

“They have witnessed my daily struggle.

“I am hoping they are not only making empty promises,” she says.

Dlabathi says he was shocked by the state of gogo’s living conditions.

“I have instructed the relevant department to speed up the process and start building the elderly woman a house.

“As we celebrate Women’s Month, the gift we can give to the women’s struggle and in recognising their continuous contribution in shaping our country and families, we’ll, therefore, build this house as part of Mama Albertina Sisulu’s centenary,” he says.

Mpya also committed to following up on the matter and ensure all the necessary corrections are instituted so that gogo can stay in her own house.

Meanwhile, a temporary structure to house Gogo Evelinah has been built while the construction work continues.

She also received a donation of food parcels and was promised new furniture to replace the damaged items.
