Springs police celebrate with Jacob’s Farm residents

“I've lived here for 30 years and life is difficult here. This will help us. Thank you,” says Kholiswa Vanya.

The Springs police, alongside Siyabonga Africa and a local store and fast food restaurant, celebrated Mandela Day with the residents of Jacob’s Farm.

The impoverished community is about 15km away from Welgedacht and has 30 households, many of which the breadwinners are unemployed.

There is no electricity and residents share one Jojo tank and still use the bucket system.

Lieutenant Colonel Rosemary Nkosi and Sergeant Busi Mahlangu handed out bags of shoes and clothing.

“We first found out about this place through complaints about crime and we interacted with them.

“We will keep coming back to work with them and help them get some services, says Springs police spokesperson Captain Johannes Ramphora.

Residents were treated to a meal from a local fast food restaurant and received donations of shoes, clothes and blankets.

“It’s our responsibility to give back to the people who support us, not just as a company but as individuals too.

“If it were up to me, I’d give every day.

Captain Johannes Ramphora and Lieutenant Colonel Monica Mthembu were overjoyed to be able to help the residents of Jacob’s Farm.

“It was quite overwhelming to see the conditions here and it was great to be a part of this and to see the smiles on their faces,” says Shaheen Petersen, area manager for the store.

Residents were grateful for the help.
