Police bulletproof vests, reflective jackets, a blue light and two R5 rifles were recovered in an abandoned vehicle in Tembisa on Thursday morning.

It was believed the vehicle had been used in an earlier failed hijacking attempt in Moreleta Park, in the east of Pretoria, Rekord East reported.

An eyewitness captured video footage of the apparent attempted hijacking on her cellphone.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said four or five men had attempted to hijack a black BMW X5 on the corner of Rubenstein and Helois roads in the Moreleta Park area at about 8am.

The would-be hijackers were reportedly driving a white BMW.

Miller said the men had fired two shots in their unsuccessful attempt to steal the vehicle and then fled the scene.

It was believed the men had been posing as police officers when they pulled over the driver.

No injuries were reported, but Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said paramedics had treated an eyewitness at the scene for shock.

The abandoned vehicle was recovered shortly afterwards in Tembisa, where police firearms, police clothing and other firearms were found inside.

Investigations are ongoing.

Earlier this month, two men were arrested after they were found driving a hijacked bakkie in Villeria, Pretoria.

The arrest came after police officers on patrol in Midrand received an alert about the bakkie, which had been hijacked in Johannesburg earlier that week.

Police stopped and subsequently searched the suspects, and they found a knife in the driver’s possession.
