Three people were killed and two others injured Friday morning when a light motor vehicle and taxi collided on Queen Mnandi Drive in Brairdene in Durban, ER24 paramedics said in a statement.
ER24 spokesperson Russell Meiring said emergency services found both vehicles in the middle of the street on arrival at the scene.
“Upon closer inspection, paramedics discovered four men and one woman lying inside the light motor vehicle,” Meiring said.
“Two men, both lying trapped, were assessed and found to have sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead on the scene.”
Meiring said that a woman, also lying trapped, was found to be in a critical condition. “Rescue services had to use specialised rescue equipment to free her from the vehicle.”
He said once she was freed, paramedics treated her and provided her with advanced life support. “Unfortunately, the woman finally succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead,” Meiring said.
“Two other men were found inside the vehicle. Assessments showed that the men has sustained spinal injuries.”
Both patients were treated for their injuries and were thereafter transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The cause of the collision is not yet known, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigation.
