A police swoop in Welkom in which 260 houses were searched resulted in the arrest of 11 people for various offences including theft, immigration breaches and illegal dealing in precious metals.
Captain Stephen Thakeng said during the swoop on Thursday, police recovered dagga, electrical appliances, computers and food items, steel window door frames and gold dust.
He said a cordon-and-search operation was held whereby stop and search, vehicle patrols, searching of taverns and houses were conducted. As many as 260 houses, six vehicles and 18 persons were searched.
“The entire police contingency was visible and searching people in Welkom CBD,” said Thakeng.
Cluster commander of Thabong, Major General Apathia Modise said: “I would like to applaud all SAPS [SA Police Service] members of both clusters, as well as specialised units for their hard work in ensuring that we continue to squeeze the space for criminals and that our children and women are and feel safe. We will never get tired as it is an ongoing operation”.
