Lightning kills two, injures five in KZN

The lightning deaths come at a time when the province has been grappling with natural disasters that have left a trail of death and destruction.

Acting KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Bongi Sithole-Moloi, has conveyed condolences to the family of two people who were killed during a lightning strike in Thafamasi area of the province.

According to a statement, two of the Shangase family died and five others seriously injured by the lightning strike. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

“KZN Cogta’s disaster management teams were promptly on the scene to provide assistance to the family and to survey the extent of the damage to their property,” spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said.

The lightning deaths come at a time when the province has been grappling with natural disasters that have left a trail of death and destruction.

Mabaso said that two people were swept away by floods while crossing a river in Harding last month.

“The drastic changes in weather require our communities to take all necessary precautions to protect themselves from lightning strikes which pose a great danger to our rural people. The installation of lightning conductors is one of the key interventions that our government encourages communities to acquire for protection, ” said Sithole-Moloi.
