A 43-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping a 5-year-old girl, Eastern Cape police said in a statement on Tuesday.
The child was raped on Saturday afternoon at a forest near Marhambeni township, in Zazulwana Village, Butterworth.
The suspect was arrested on Monday.
Police spokesperson Jackson Manatha said the man was supposed to take the child home, but instead took her to the forest where he allegedly raped her.
The two had left the child’s mother at the river where she had been washing clothes.
Manatha said: “The victim broke her silence to her mother about the alleged rape after her mother arrived at home.”
The suspect is expected to appear in the Butterworth Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
