The South African Communist Party said its former leader Chris Hani’s killer, Clive Derby-Lewis, died without coming clean about the hit. Spokesperson Alex Mashilo expressed condolences to Derby-Lewis’s family.
“Unfortunately, he died without making a full disclosure of the whole truth. All we wanted was the truth and we couldn’t get it from him,” Mashilo said.
The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania said Derby-Lewis had died a “dignified” death.

Afrikaans organisation AfriForum, which accused Masutha of violating Derby-Lewis’s human rights, expressed the same sentiments.
“Derby-Lewis was a perpetrator and a victim in his life. The way he was dealt with sends red flags about our criminal justice system and that politics plays a role in the outcome of how people are treated,” said AfriForum deputy CEO Ernst Roets.
The DA’s federal executive council chairperson, James Selfe, said while the party extended its condolences, one could not forget that Derby-Lewis brought the country to the “brink of a civil war. Clearly the medical parole given to Schabir was a sham and unlawful …”
