Municipality provides update as landfill site fire spreads

Mogale City Local Municipality said they are working tirelessly to fully extinguish the fire and address all health and safety concerns.

The Luipaardsvlei Landfill site fire is not entirely extinguished as yet, the municipality said.

According to Mogale City Local Municipality’s (MCLM) communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu, the Environmental Management and West Rand District Fire and Rescue teams contained the fire over the weekend but it kept on spreading.

Mahlangu added that the health and safety of the on-site workers is a priority.

“Necessary safety measures were implemented this morning [May 21], allowing the teams to resume operations efficiently. We are working tirelessly to fully extinguish the fire and address all health and safety concerns that the city’s residents and businesses are exposed to,” Mahlangu stated.

Mahlangu said that there is specialised equipment on site including a tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB), water tanker truck, heavy tandem roller, mobile water bowser, tipper truck and an excavator.

“Additional equipment is en route while some are confirmed to arrive today. Efforts to extinguish the fire are underway and significant progress is expected by the end of the week. While we ask for residents’ continued patience during this time, we want to reassure those living near the landfill site that no residential areas are currently under threat,” Mahlangu concluded.
