Valentine’s Day appearance for ‘child porn’ headmaster

The case against a former headmaster implicated in an international child pornography racket has been postponed until Valentine’s Day.

The State asked for more time to investigate the matter during the man’s appearance in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

He may not be named until he has pleaded to the charge of possession of child pornography.

The prosecution presented the court with a letter from the director of public prosecutions in Pretoria, which read: “Due to the large quantity of the evidentiary material involved… the investigating teams are awaiting the finalisation of various reports.”

It stated that the matter formed part of a wider police investigation in various provinces.

“In this regard there are three separate cases that are on the roll in the magistrate’s courts in Pretoria, White River and Potchefstroom.”

The court postponed the matter to February 14 for further police investigation.

The principal was arrested on August 18 with five other people, among them professionals, from different provinces. They are reportedly believed to be part of South Africa’s biggest child pornography racket, involving hundreds of people connected to Canada, the UK and the US, among others.

The school board decided to fire the headmaster after his first court appearance. He is out on bail of R1 000.
