10:30 – Standing ovation for Shakes Mashaba

Bafana Bafana coach, Shakes Mashaba received a standing ovation from soccer fans on his arrival at the Moses Mabhida Stadium where the funeral service of slain Bafana Bafana Captain, Senzo Meyiwa, is underway.

Orlando Pirates Chairman, Irvin Khoza, South African Football Association (SAFA) President, Danny Jordaan, and Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula, are among some of the speakers who will be addressing the mourners.

Meyiwa’s casket is scheduled to arrive at the stadium at around 2pm. It will then be transported to Heroes Acre at the Chesterville Cemetery where the soccer player would be buried. – Clive Ndou

10:05 – KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu arrives

Mchunu walked across the side of the pitch, making a cross with his arms — a sign associated with Orlando Pirates, who Meyiwa also captained. Health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo arrived shortly after 9:30am. A stage with two big screens was set up on the pitch, with a tent for guests at its side. Flowers adorned the stage. – Sapa

10:00 – Thousands gather for Senzo funeral

Thousands of soccer fans from accross the country arrrived at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban by bus, train and minibus taxi to pay their last respects to their slain hero, Bafana Bafana captain, Senzo Meyiwa.

Singing and dancing, many fans arrived at the stadium – where the soccer player’s funeral service is currently underway – as early as 7am.
“I’m a Kaizer Chiefs fan but today I’m joining my fellow brothers from Orland Pirates to celebrate the life of one of the country’s top goal keepers – Senzo,” Sandile Mkhwanazi, who came from Ladysmith by bus, said.

Waving posters, hailing Meyiwa as a hero and demonising his killers, the fans sang Hamba Kahle Meyiwa as they waited for proceedings to officially begin. – Clive Ndou
