The athlete was charged with murder following the fatal shooting of his model and law-graduate girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He shot her through the locked toilet door in his Pretoria home on Valentine’s Day last year. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder.

The Judge ruled on Thursday that the state had not proved that Pistorius was guilty of murder in any form – either premeditated murder or of murder with indirect intent.

The ruling received mixed reactions from legal experts had mixed reactions on Thursday.

Today she will hand down judgment as to whether he is guilty of culpable homicide.

Judge Masipa has already ruled his conduct was negligent and that a reasonable person in the same circumstances, with the same disability as Pistorius, would have foreseen the possibility that someone could be killed and would have taken reasonable steps to prevent such an occurrence. 

Pistorius is also charged with three contraventions of the Firearms Control Act, one of illegal possession of ammunition and two of discharging a firearm in public. He has also pleaded not guilty to these charges.
