A 40-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl, North West police said on Thursday.
Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko said the man was sentenced at the Mogwase Regional Court on Wednesday.
“The sentence follows apprehension and trial of the accused for rape of a 10-year-old minor on March 28, 2015. It was reported at the time of the incident, March 28, 2015, that the minor was on her way home from her aunt’s place in the afternoon when she met with the accused,” she said.
The man asked the girl to accompany him, and she refused, but he grabbed her and took her to a nearby field, where he raped her.
The girl lost consciousness during the ordeal. She realised after gaining consciousness that she was raped and reported the matter to her mother, who then informed the police.
North West provincial commissioner Lieutenant-General Baile Motswenyane welcomed the sentence handed and indicated that the police would continue to work hard to ensure merciless criminals got lengthy sentences.
