Gold Fields on Monday announced that an employee had died at the South Deep mine near Johannesburg in a fall-of-ground accident on Saturday following a -1.5 magnitude seismic event.
South Deep said management immediately suspended mining activities, but ongoing seismic activity in the area meant the in loco inspection had been deferred until later on Monday.
Gold Fields chief executive officer Nick Holland said: “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased. Management will do everything possible to support them in this hour of need.”
Holland said this was the first fatality at South Deep since May 2015. He added a review would reassess all safety protocols, procedures and standards.
