Bidvest Wits might have secured a huge advantage over Cape Town City after their 3-0 win in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal, but coach Gavin Hunt was not really impressed with his team’s display despite the scoreline.

Three goals in the first half from Eleazor Rodgers, Ellias Pelembe and Gabadinho Mahango were enough to put a smile on any coach despite Moeneeb Josephs’ red card, which saw Darren Keet making his debut as the Clever Boys finished the game with 10 men.

According to Hunt, his side’s performance was very poor. He said the two-week international break hindered his players’ performance.

“Disappointed, really, I mean we were poor, it wasn’t good. We can see the two weeks certainly affected us, a lot of players were away and came back a little bit sluggish,” said the Wits coach.

“Yeah, we got three but we really dropped off the pace and it wasn’t good, but we move on, we go to the next game.”

Moving forward, the Clever Boys mentor is hoping for a much better performance in their second league game of the season, when they travel to Limpopo for an encounter with Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium tomorrow.

“We were a yard off the pace, we looked like we needed a gallop so we got one tonight (Saturday) and hopefully we’ll be better on Tuesday,” he added.

Wits have had a bright start to their campaign this season, with the victory against City being a third one of the season for Hunt’s charges.

Meanwhile, City’s coach Eric Tinkler felt his team was disorganised and couldn’t match Wits.

“We said in order to win this game we needed to match them in terms of aggression. We didn’t win a ball, a challenge, every first and second ball they won it, we didn’t stop the crosses coming into the box and looked really disorganised and poor in the first half, which was extremely disappointing,” said Tinkler.

City will host Wits at the Cape Town Stadium for the second leg on the 17th September.
