The South African Football Association have insisted that Shakes Mashaba will take charge of Bafana Bafana for the upcoming 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

Speculation was rife that Mashaba was set to lose his job after failing to get the team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon next year.

This was after Safa president Danny Jordaan slammed the performance in the wake of a 1-1 draw with Mauritania in their final qualifier.

A Safa technical committee at the weekend heard a report from the Bafana coach on what went wrong during the Afcon 2017 qualifiers and on how he plans to tackle future challenges, starting with the World Cup qualifiers – Bafana’s first match is at the start of October against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou.

The technical committee will in turn present a report to the Safa executive committee on September 24. But Safa say Mashaba’s future has never been up for discussion.

“The meeting had nothing at all to do with the coach’s future,” said Safa head of communications Dominic Chimhavi.

“It was a standard meeting. Shakes Mashaba was given two mandates, to qualify for Gabon 2017 and to qualify for the World Cup. If a student sits two papers, writes the first and fails, you still have to give him a chance to sit the second.

“Shakes Mashaba is going to see us through to the World Cup qualifiers.”

Bafana won the Nelson Mandela Challenge 1-0 against the Pharaohs, though the true test for Mashaba is to come against Burkina Faso in October.
