Myeni is said to enjoy a close relationship with the president and over the years has seemingly been protected by government under Zuma’s instruction while SAA performs badly financially.
Here are three times she survived being axed at SAA while others took the fall for the airline’s poor performance.
- Vuyisile Kona, former SAA chief executive officer didn’t last very long in the post when he was fired after he didn’t see eye-to-eye with his boss, Myeni. Then public enterprises minister Malusi Gigaba let him go after four months in 2012.
Kona had tried to turn the airline around by bringing in Lufthansa Consulting. But it appears he became the fall guy for the airline’s dismal financial performance and was removed.
- After complaining about Myeni to Lynne Brown, the public enterprises minister, several board members were released.
According to Mail and Guardian, Myeni is notorious for running SAA like a private company and for keeping people waiting at serious strategic meetings. Once again, others were dismissed while Myeni retained her position.
- Former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene was surprisingly axed last year, and the cause of this was linked to his disagreements with Myeni. Nene would not approve a costly airbus deal that would see a restructured deal with Airbus go ahead.
