Two weeks after the Baviaanspoort Prison was robbed at gunpoint, police are no closer to catching the culprits, reports the Pretoria East Rekord.
Johan Burger of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) said this sent a negative message to the public about the safety of government institutions.
“This indicates that nobody is safe. The police headquarters was broken into once, the Hawks office in Silverton has been broken into several times and laptops stolen, and documents were stolen from the State Security Agency.”
Baviaanspoort prison in the east of Pretoria was robbed on Sunday, August 14.
Kameelpoort police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said: “Two assailants driving a green City Golf forced guards at Baviaanspoort prison to open the gates at about 12.50am.”
He said the men took two firearms, a cellphone and a laptop from a safe in the guardroom, then fled.
The guards were not harmed during the robbery.
Shibambo said there were still no leads but appealed to the public for assistance with any information that could lead to the arrest of the men.
