Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has yet to lose against Kaizer Chiefs, but he knows he would be fooling no one but himself if he thought his incredible record against South Africa’s self-appointed cup kings would still be standing come tonight.

Tinkler will guide his team against Amakhosi in the first MTN8 quarterfinal at Cape Town Stadium this evening.

While coaching Chiefs’ biggest rivals, Orlando Pirates, Tinkler guided his team to two wins over Amakhosi with the third match ending in a draw.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s encounter, Tinkler said Chiefs were going through a revival phase which makes them dangerous opponents.

“They will come with all guns blazing,” said Tinkler. “Steve (Komphela, Chiefs coach) has made a few changes, they are going through a period of adaptation … we need to be cautious,” added Tinkler.

City will not be short on confidence going into this game, having won their first match convincingly on Wednesday.

The Absa Premiership new boys beat Polokwane City 2-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the same venue, with Bongolethu Jayiya and Aubrey Ngoma scoring the goals.

Komphela said his team are aware that tonight’s match is a do- or-die affair and are prepared to give everything.

“One thing about the MTN8 is that it is wafa-wafa, it calls for maximum effort,” said Komphela who is under some pressure to start delivering some silverware this season after finishing the previous one empty-handed.

Finishing a season without silverware is something alien to Chiefs who boast the record of winning more trophies than any other team in the PSL.

Komphela came under the spotlight on Wednesday after Bidvest Wits made light work of his team, beating them 2-1 in a league match. But Komphela knows pressure is a standard feature at the Naturena-based team.

“You have to embrace the pressure, you need to do right … the most important people are the supporters whom we have to make happy.

“My main ambition is to deliver,” said Komphela.

Kick-off is 7pm.
