Fifteen children and seven adults were rescued after a bakkie was stopped during a roadblock on the R21 near the Nellmapius Drive offramp, Centurion, on Thursday morning.

The rescue comes after the Gauteng traffic police conducted a roadblock on the R21 and pulled over the Toyota bakkie just before noon.

Upon inspecting the bakkie, 15 minors and seven adults were seen seated at the back. They were all undocumented, police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said.

One of them was a two-month-old baby.

Gauteng traffic department spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo said the infant was found covered under a yellow plastic tarpaulin.

Kweza said the adults were aged between 20 and 44.

“The driver (38) is currently being questioned as his passport was also fake. The driver told the police that he was transporting the group to Tembisa.”

Police were investigating a possible syndicate and opened a human trafficking docket.

“Further charges cannot be ruled out. The possibility of the involvement of a syndicate will also be investigated as similar cases were picked up in various areas recently.”
