Former Orlando Pirates captain Lucky Lekgwathi – who retired officially on Wednesday aged 40 – wants his records at the club broken.

Lekgwathi was conveyed with a signed Pirates jersey as his parting gift before the team’s first game of the new season against Golden Arrows on Wednesday night.

The 40-year-old made history when he led the team, as they won consecutive trebles between 2011 and 2012.

“In 14 years there are plenty of memories, but the best by far is the Double Treble. No doubt. Nothing tops that,” said Lekgwathi.

“I was the first captain to lead the team to a Double Treble, and I hope I won’t be the last to do it for this club,” he added.

Phakaaathi has learnt that Lekgwathi’s squad number 14 may be retired in his honour. Pirates have previously retired number 10 in honour of former great Jomo Sono, while 13 and 22 were retired in honour of the team’s fallen stars, Clifford Moleko and Lesley Manyathela, respectively.

Lekgwathi said 14 is his lucky number: “It is 14 years as a Buccaneer. Fourteen is my lucky number. Fourteen seasons, 14 Bafana caps …”

Although now retired, he said he would still avail himself if the team needed him.

“The time had come for me to call it a day. But I will always be available to any of the players who call on me for advice.”
