The minister dismissed the athlete as ‘abusive’.

Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula says he has decided to ignore athlete Sunette Viljoen’s “abusive” tweets.

The Olympic silver medallist complained on Twitter about the alleged abuse of athletes by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc). She first said Sascoc needed to be investigated for corruption, pointing to what she said was “R70 million donation by the Lottery two weeks before Rio”.

She further complained about how “heartbreaking” it was to be presented with poor kit for the Rio Olympic games. Some athletes had to look for the own tailors to fix the “oversized” kit, she said.

Viljoen claimed she was also talking to the fellow athletes, and said it was unfair that she was doing it without the help of other athletes.

Viljoen, however, later admitted to having received her first payment and thanked Sascoc for the “quick response this time”. Mbalula told City Press Viljoen was set to receive R200 000 for her silver medal, and said that she had received an additional R70 000.
