A police chase and shooting led to the arrest of an armed man after he fled in a hijacked car in the east of Pretoria on Wednesday.

Boschkop police spokesperson Captain Marissa Van Der Merwe said the Tshwane metro police noticed a suspicious white Toyota Corolla with two occupants in Welbekend.

“The vehicle was followed for a while and the metro police called for backup, which they received from the Garsfontein police. The suspicious car, however, started driving faster.”

The TMPD officers received confirmation that the car was hijacked. After noticing firearms in the vehicle, the metro police opened fire, she said.

“The suspects drove into the entrance of Mooikloof Ridge and collided with another vehicle that was coming out. One of the suspects was seriously injured.”

The perpetrator was taken to hospital under police guard. His accomplice fled on foot.

A passenger of the second vehicle was also taken to hospital. Investigations continue.
