A 16-year-old boy reportedly drowned in the Ncandu River, near the Newcastle Taxi Rank in KwaZulu-Natal, earlier this afternoon, the Newcastle Advertiser reports.
According to witnesses at the scene, the teen was seen running into the river shortly before he drowned.
“We saw he could not swim. He struggled to get out of the river, and then he disappeared under the water,” said a witness, who wished to remain anonymous.
Police divers were summoned to recover the teenager, and paramedics attempted to revive him. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
All emergency services were at the scene to conduct a thorough investigation to determine what happened prior to the drowning.
