Mweene, who made just six starts in all competitions for Sundowns last season, is currently serving as a third choice goalkeeper behind Denis Onyango and Wayne Sandilands.
A source close to Mweene told Phakaaathi that the Zambian goalkeeper wanted Sundowns to either terminate his contract or send him out on loan.
“He believes that his lack of game time at Sundowns will cost him his place in the national team. He has told Pitso (Mosimane) about this, but Sundowns are reluctant to release him,” said the source.
Mweene sat on bench during Tuesday night’s Caf Champions League encounter against Enyimba.
With Onyango rested, Sandilands started on goals for Sundowns in a game that the Brazilians lost 3-1.
