The Hawks said on Wednesday that two Nigerian men and two local women were arrested in Cape Town on Tuesday night for opening bank accounts with banks in South Africa and using them to receive ill-gotten monies from online dating victims.
The Hawks said a suspect was arrested shortly after receiving a dummy parcel at Postnet Somerset West Mall. The Hawks had sent the parcel.
Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Hawks seized five laptops, two of them with profiles of people who have been fraudulently used to scam people online, as well as 12 cellphones.
The suspects, aged between 27 and 38 years, will make their first appearance at the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
The arrest of these four suspects brings the total number of suspects arrested for online dating scam to 11.
