DA leader Mmusi Maimane say’s the party’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba has a tough a job ahead of him.

Johannesburg mayor Parks Tau says people have voted in the way they have in the recent local government elections for a reason, and that the ANC will have to deal with the issues people are raising.

“I serve on the mandate of the ANC to ensure that we are able to advance transformation, and we are able to ensure that the city becomes the world-class city,” Tau said ahead of the Johannesburg council meeting today.

“The city is leading in terms of transformation but the electorate has made a decision.” Tau, who is also ANC regional chairperson in Johannesburg, claimed that many people have come back and told him they voted another way.

“The reality is that this is the result we are dealing with,” Tau said.  The Johannesburg metro became one of the hung councils when there was no outright winner after the elections. The council meeting will elect a new mayor, speaker and chief whip.

The ANC has formed a coalition with the Patriotic Alliance and African Independent Congress, while the DA has joined forces with EFF and other smaller political parties. Tau said the EFF would have to account to the people of Johannesburg if things went wrong.

“You can’t stand in front of the people of Johannesburg and say we think that this guy has done a good job,” Tau said. “We think the transformation project is on track, and you are prepared to reserve that. I think the people of Johannesburg will punish them.”

He said people from different political parties have they believed in the work the ANC has done in the metro and wanted to vote for the party. “But there is nothing we can do about it if they have threatened to not vote in terms of their conscience,” Tau said.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane said the party’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate Herman Mashaba would have a tough a job ahead of him. “The mandate that the people have given us is a mandate of change,”Maimane said.

“I think the people of Johannesburg are tired of corruption.  We have to bring that sort of change.”
