SAUS recently threatened a nationwide varsity shutdown, demanding another 0% fee increase for the upcoming new academic year.

Students from various institutions of higher learning will find out at the end of this month if there will be a tuition fee increase for 2017 or not.

Department of higher education and training spokesperson Khaye Nkwanyana said yesterday that Minister Blade Nzimande would make an announcement once he had concluded talks with different stakeholders.

“He still wants to meet with different NGOs, trade unions and faith-based organisations. In a nutshell, a societal buy-in is being sought,” Nkwanyana said.

The SA Union of Students (SAUS) recently threatened a nationwide varsity shutdown, demanding another 0% fee increase for the upcoming academic year. But SAUS president Avela Mjajubana said last week the union would consult with different student bodies first.
