Makua underwent a successful trial under the watchful eye of Ajax coach Roger De Sa and his technical team.
Makua spent his youth days at Wits, where De Sa started his coaching career in 2001. The pacey, skilful winger recently showed his quality by scoring four goals in two training matches.
The 23-year-old attacking threat is currently doing his BSC Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying through Wits University. Makua is a bright young talent, with the football skills to prove it, which makes him an ideal fit for Ajax Cape Town.
De Sa was excited to sign the player.
“Neo is another exciting young player we add to our squad,” said De Sa.
“He is very quick and skilful as well. He will definitely add a dimension to our squad that we are looking for in attack. He did very well in the Varsity Cup with Wits. He can with his left and right foot, which is something we look for at Ajax. I think he’s going to fit into the Ajax system very well.”
Makua was eager to start a new chapter of his career at Ajax.
“It’s been quite an experience so far, the guys have welcomed me into their team,” said Ajax.
“The coach also welcomed me with open arms and hasn’t put too much pressure on me yet. They’ve allowed me to show what I’ve got to offer, so it’s been really good here so far. We spent a bit of time together as a team in George and I got to know a different side to the guys off the field, especially with my roommate Scara (Masilake Phohlongo). We went to the mall and watched some movies, we also spoke about our goals for the season, so overall the trip was successful for us as a team.”
Makua holds the club in high regard for developing youth players and giving them the platform to showcase their talent on the biggest stage.
“Ajax Cape Town is a team who always gives the youth opportunities. They aren’t scared to play against the best with young players, unlike other teams. There are also some experienced players who guide the youngsters and mould them into better players. The team is full of energy and I believe we are going to make a lot of teams sweat this season.”
