Higher education ministry congratulates Wits

Wits University has been ranked first in Africa by the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

The higher education and training ministry has congratulated Wits University on being ranked first in Africa by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai rankings.

“We also congratulate [the] University of Cape Town, [University of] Stellenbosch, and University of KwaZulu-Natal for being ranked in the top 500 universities in the world,” the ministry said in a statement.

“These results reaffirm the quality of our higher education system in South Africa and in Africa. It is this strength and quality that we want to preserve and safeguard for the country, the continent, and the world,” it said.
