English Premier League side Sunderland have confirmed the signing of midfielder Steven Pienaar.

The former Bafana Bafana skipper agreed on a one-year deal with the Black Cats following a successful trial at the club, reuniting with former Everton FC manager David Moyes.

Pienaar was rumoured to be on his way back to the PSL after his contract with the Toffees ended last season, with Mamelodi Sundowns as the front runners to secure his services. Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane hoped Pienaar would join his team after the midfielder became a free agent.

“Sunderland FC can confirm the signing of Steven Pienaar on a one-year deal,” reads a tweet from the club’s official website.
