With the Democratic Alliance (DA) gearing up to elect Solly Msimanga as mayor in the country’s administrative capital on Friday, Business Day live is reporting that the metro’s mayoral chain to be used at the swearing in ceremony has been stolen.
Although the business site hasn’t elaborated on details involving the alleged theft and when it occurred, the mayoral chain is significant to mayors of municipal councils, and it is presented to them before they can assume office at the inaugural meeting of the city council. The chain is worn by mayors at official special events.
Msimanga will be elected as mayor after the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) announced on Wednesday it would lend its support to the DA in the capital but without forming a coalition government with the party.
Briefing the media at the Tshwane council chambers on Thursday, the ANC administration in Tshwane – which is preparing to take on the role of official opposition in the city – said it will press the new DA-led council to focus on job creation and improving the quality of living for those in the townships, including building on its successes.
Meanwhile, DA mayors have been elected in Mogale City and Nelson Mandela Bay. Lynn Pannall is Mogale City’s new mayor while Athol Trollip has taken over in Nelson Mandela Bay.
