A 12-year-old orphan was mauled by lions at the Otavi Farm in Parys on Thursday, Free State police said.

It is alleged that the deceased, Nkalamelo Latha, accompanied one of the farm workers to the farm.

Police spokesperson Captain Livhuhani Hani said, the farm worker entered the lions’ enclosure with Nkalamelo and the lions escaped from their feeding area and attacked the farm worker and the deceased.

“The farm worker managed to escape without injuries. However, Nkananelo was not so fortunate. He was attacked by lions and succumbed to his wounds.”

Hani said Nkananelo was an orphan and was residing with his sister and her husband, a supervisor at the Otavi farm.

Police were still investigating the incident.
