Police in Johannesburg said on Thursday that two men between the ages 32 and 35 were arrested by the flying squad in the CBD after they were searched and found in possession of an active mortar bomb.
Police said the suspects were apprehended on Wednesday for being in possession of explosives other than fireworks without a permit.
“Police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw two suspicious males carrying a heavy bag, and they stopped and searched them,” said Captain Xoli Mbele.
Mbele said the police bomb disposal unit confirmed that the item recovered in the search was an active mortar bomb.
Police investigations continue. The suspects will appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
