A BMW plowed into the back of a stationary vehicle on the N1 South near Samrand, killing one person and injuring four passengers.

One person died and another four sustained moderate injuries in a serious collision on the N1 South by Samrand Road in Midrand just after 1pm this afternoon.

Emer-G-Med spokesperson Max Cohen said: “It’s alleged that a car was stationary in the fast lane, after having broken down, when it was rear-ended by a BMW at a high speed.”

He said one person from the stationary vehicle was assessed to have sustained fatal injuries, and paramedics could do nothing further but declare the patient dead on the scene.

“The four other occupants sustained moderate injuries, two requiring Advanced Life Support intervention. Paramedics stabilised them while the fire and rescue personnel worked to free them from the vehicle, using the ‘jaws of life’ and other rescue equipment,” said Cohen.

He said a sixth person, the driver of the BMW, was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries, and refused any hospitalisation.

The traffic police were on the scene to investigate accordingly, he said.
