‘I think at national level we should draw confidence and be proud of the fact that a South African dominates an event at the Olympic Games.’

Springbok coach Allister Coetzee took time out at Monday’s media conference to send a special message of congratulations to athlete Wayde van Niekerk on his Olympic gold medal.

“I think in general we as Springboks don’t live in our own world.

“I think at national level we should draw confidence and be proud of the fact that a South African dominates an event at the Olympic Games.

“And national teams and sides are a symbol of excellence and yes … we did speak about it, and it’s great to talk about it when you sit around at the breakfast table.

“They are competing athletes at the highest level, and it was great and we as a team would like to congratulate him.

“A fantastic achievement and what the irony is when you see how old his coach is … a lady and if you talk about the diversity of our country, an old woman coaching a young guy, so it was great, excellent – a great achievement, there’s still hope for me!”
