Supposedly reputable news outlets in Africa have been reporting on the former president’s passing without checking the facts.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation released a statement late on Sunday to reassure the world that the former statesman is still very much alive. A dodgy website manufactured a story about his death earlier in the week.

In the statement, the foundation said: “The Thabo Mbeki Foundation continues to be inundated with queries regarding former President Thabo Mbeki’s health following a hoax report about his passing by a dubious website earlier this week.

“It is regrettable that some media outlets including public broadcasters on the continent, have reported on the hoax as fact without reference to the foundation or accredited South African Embassies and High Commissions in their countries.

“We would like to confirm that President Mbeki is alive, in good health and working on African Union peace assignments. He is currently in Ethiopia facilitating peace talks between parties to the conflicts in the Republic of Sudan. There is therefore no need for concern.”
